MKV is a multimedia container format that typically stores multiple audio tracks and subtitles. However, since it is not as popular as other video file formats, such as MOV and MP4, playing MKV files can become difficult on Windows computers.

3. HandBrake
HandBrake is a free and open source video converter that supports most media formats. It is a cross-platform application available on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.
HandBrake is one of the easiest video converters you can use. For a regular conversion, all you have to do is drag and drop the video into the app and it will automatically apply the most commonly used container settings. Then you can choose the destination folder and start encoding to convert the video.
If you need more advanced options, HandBrake has plenty of options. You can change subtitles, add chapter markers, perform batch scans, use video filters, and more.
1. Download HandBrake. Run the setup file and install the application.
2. Next, go to the Microsoft DotNET site and download the .NET 6.0 SDK x64. Without this, HandBrake might not launch or work.
3. Next, open HandBrake.
4. Click File and then select the MKV file to convert. You can also drag and drop files into the app to open them.
5. In the Summary tab, make sure Format is set to MP4. Here, the example is using the default MP4 container settings applied by the application.
6. Next, click the Browse button and choose a location to save your new file.
7. You can rename the file if you want and click Save.
8. On the main HandBrake window, click Start Encode. HandBrake will start encoding the video, so wait until the process is complete. The processing time depends on the file size and your system capabilities.
The only downside to using HandBrake is having to download an additional .NET toolkit from Microsoft. However, it is a great open source video conversion utility that can cater to both casual and expert users. You can also use it to compress and reduce video file size without losing quality.
Converting MKV files to MP4 allows you to share and play videos on any video compatible device. While you may not see any difference in the output size, the quality should not be compromised either.
For quick conversion, you can use VLC media player. If you need something a bit feature-rich, HandBrake offers plenty of customization options and is completely free to use. Then there are a bunch of online video converters that allow you to convert from anywhere and on any device with some limitations.
