Error 0x80070079: The Semaphore Timeout Period Has Expired

During the transfer of files across networks, one error that occurs is Error 0x80070079, The semaphore timeout period has expired. Semaphore is simply a variable. This error is caused due to several factors. It includes the incorrect configuration of drivers or the network, deadlock state, the server being loaded with a lot of tasks or if any location is not available. This error message can even appear when trying to create a System Image, or Copy or Move files on Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1 as well as Windows 7.

Method 1: Update network driver If the error is caused by a faulty network adapter, the best way to fix the problem is to update the driver 1. Press the Windows keys + R key to open quick-access menu. Click Device Manager to open it.

2. Double-click Network Adapters and expand it. 3. Right-click on the Network Adapter option and afterward click on Update Driver from the context menu

4. Click Search automatically for updated driver software.

5. Wait for few minutes, as Windows will search for the latest driver update and will install it to your system.

Finally, restart your device and see if the issue is resolved.

Method 2: Reset Network Settings

1. Press the Windows keys + I combination on the keyboard to open Settings. 2. Click on Network & Internet on the main page menu. 3. Scroll down and click the Network Reset button.

4. After that click on Reset now and see if the issue is resolved.

Method 3: Disable Windows firewall temporarily

1. Open Control Panel and click Windows Defender Firewall.

2. Click Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.

3. Under Domain network settings, Private network settings, and Public network settings, select the Turn off Windows Defender Firewall (not recommended) option, and click OK.

4. Wait till the process is completed and reboot your PC to check if the error is fixed.

Method 4: Disable Windows Antivirus Temporarily 1. Press the Window Keys + I combination on your keyboard to open the Settings. 2. Select Update and Security from the menu. 3. Click on Windows Security from the left column and then select Virus & Threat Protection. 4. After that click on Manage settings under the Virus and threat protection option. 5. Finally, turn OFF the Real-time Protection and see if the issue is resolved.

Method 5: Uninstall 3rd Party Antivirus Software 1. Press Window Keys + R from your keyboard, type appwiz.cpl in the search bar to open the list of installed programs on your device.

2. Right-click on the antivirus software, click on Uninstall and hopefully the issue would be resolved.

3. Check to see if doing so has fixed the Semaphore Timeout Period has Expired issue.

Method 6: Run CHKDSK Command If the error is caused due to corrupt file system or bad sectors on the drive, you may run CHKDSK command. This command line utility may fix file system corruption, and allocate new sector for data located on bad sectors. Also, it may help you restore data from corrupt drive/partition. 1. Open Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. 2. In the Command Prompt window, type chkdsk /f /r x: and hit Enter. X is the letter of a drive partition, /f fixes errors, and /r locates the bad sectors and reads information from them.
