4 Ways to Copy Files Faster in Windows

Copying and paste files is a basic task that any Windows user has done more or less. Copy-pasting a file is basically nothing complicated, but many files at the same time so that it is fast, stable, and trouble-free is something that not everyone knows.

A. Robocopy (Robust File Copy)

You may not know it, but Robocopy is an extremely useful command line tool built into Windows that provides more power when you need to run repetitive or highly complex file copying processes. .

One feature that makes Robocopy special (but often overlooked) is its multi-threaded feature that allows you to copy multiple files at once. Robocopy can make this process much easier and faster, especially over the internet.

To use Robocopy, first, open the Start menu, enter the keyword "Command Prompt" and click open the corresponding search results returned. Alternatively, you can also right-click Start and select “Windows PowerShell.” Choose either method, and enter the following command:

robocopy /?

Press Enter to get instructions based on the copy parameters you want.

If you want to do the same copy process frequently, you can create a batch file and double click to run it, or set the script to run through the Task Scheduler as an automated process.

B. Upgrading the hard drive

It sounds unrelated, but in fact, the hard drive plays a huge role in deciding the speed of copying and moving data on the system. Solid State Drives (SSD) for copying (retrieval) data much faster than HDD. So if you want to improve the data copy speed, or rather, the data access speed of the whole system, consider upgrading to an SSD.

The same applies when copying data in the system to a removable drive. If you use a flash drive with USB 2.0 or an old external HDD, the file transfer speed will definitely not be high. Replace it with a USB 3.0 drive and you will see a marked improvement in everything.

C. Use copy support software

When copying files on Windows there are usually two problems: speed and the inability to pause the process. Although you can speed up the file copying process with a few tips, it is not possible to pause the file transfer and resume it later. To speed up file copying as well as manage this process better, you can consider using supporting software, such as TeraCopy.

TeraCopy is one of the most popular data copying software available today with an intuitive, feature-rich and easy-to-use interface. Notably, this tool has a built-in algorithm capable of dynamically adjusting the cache to reduce search time and speed up the copying process. Along with that comes the ability to verify files to make sure they are exactly the same, and even alert users if something goes wrong in the process.

TeraCopy has a beautiful interface, integrates with Windows and is regularly updated. The application also supports performing asynchronous copying, which speeds up file transfers between two hard drives. The ability to intelligently ignore problematic files so that you can review them later without terminating the entire data transfer is also a useful feature of TeraCopy.

D. Compress files before copying

This will be very useful when you need to move many small files at once. Through tools like WinRAR or 7zip, you can split many small files into one large file with a much smaller size, thereby making file copying much faster and more manageable.

Once the copying is complete, you can simply extract the large file and use the small files inside as usual.
