On Windows 10, updates automatically download and install periodically to keep your device with the latest security patches and improvements. The only caveat is that most updates require a system restart in order to complete the installation process, and to ensure they get installed in time, Windows 10 will show you different notifications for you know that a restart is required.
For example, when your computer asks to restart to complete the update, you'll see Windows Update and shortcut icons with orange indicators. In addition, the system will push toast notifications to let you know in advance and options to snooze, configure schedule or restart immediately.
While these prompts can be helpful, they can also add unnecessary distractions that can disrupt your workflow (especially for tech-savvy users, masters. manually install the updates). If you don't want to receive notifications when a restart is required to apply the update, Windows 10 has at least two ways to disable the feature using Windows Update or Local Group Policy Editor settings.
Method 1. Disable Windows Update restart notifications using Settings
1. Open Start. Click Update & Security > Windows Update.
2. Click the Advanced Options button.
3. Turn off the Show a notification when your PC requires a restart to finish updating toggle switch.
4. Under the Update options section, turn off the Restart this device as soon as possible when a restart is required to install an update toggle switch.
Method 2.Disable Windows Update restart notifications using Group Policy
1. Press Windows Key+ R at the same time. Enter gpedit.msc and hit OK.
2. Browse to the following path:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Componets > Windows Update
3. On the right side, double-click the Turn off auto-restart notifications for update installations
4. Select the Enabled option.Click Apply. Click the OK
Once you've completed the steps, Windows 10 will no longer push alerts about automatic restart to install updates. Additionally, when this policy is enabled, it disables Show notifications when your PC requires a restart to complete the update, and Restart this device as soon as possible when it requires a reboot to Install update options under "Advanced options" for Windows Update.
While these steps will stop the update restart messages, they will not prevent the system from restarting automatically. If you want to avoid sudden reboots, you should configure active hours or schedule a custom reboot to gracefully restart when you're not using your computer.
