If you are using a Windows 10 laptop and just want to turn off the screen and not go into Sleep Mode, here's how.
Desktop computers often have many keys to turn the screen on / off quickly, thereby saving power because the screen is very power consuming. A few laptops also have these shortcuts, but if not, some of the ways below apply on Windows 10 to perform this task.
Method 1: Turn off Windows 10 screen with the power button
Under the default setting, pressing the power button will turn off the device. You can change this setting again and press the power button to turn off the monitor as follows.
1. Open Settings app. Navigate to System > Power & sleep.
2. In the Related settings section, click Additional power settings link to open Power Options window.
3. Here, in the left-pane, click Choose what the powers do link. This action will open System Settings window.
You will now be on the power button customization screen and be able to change its function. There are two options here: You can change its function when it's plugged in and running on battery. To change a setting, first decide if you enable this setting when the laptop is plugged into a power source, on battery power, or both. Then, in the corresponding columns, find the row named When I press the power button and click the drop-down menu. Then, select Turn off the display.
Now, when you hold the power button, the screen turns off. Pressing and holding the power button again will turn the screen on again. Be careful not to hold the power button for too long. If not, you could have your laptop go through the forced shutdown process. Turning off your screen is a lot different from putting your laptop in Hibernation or Sleep mode. There is a clear difference between Hibernation and Sleep modes, but in short, both cause the laptop to stop working.
However, turning off the screen does not suspend the system. It should look like you're using a PC, but turn off your monitor and your computer's programs continue to run. This is useful in case the laptop screen turns off when it installs an important update or plays music without any pictures.
Also note that if you have any external monitors attached to your laptop, these will also turn off when you press the power button. Hence, this is not a great option if you want to play media content on a larger screen without a laptop screen distracting you (in this case, it's better to keep the laptop active. by closing the lid).
